Thing 10

I happen to think that Google docs has tremendous potential for an English teacher. I envision students writing rough drafts, saving and sending them to me for editing. I envision seniors working on research papers working on them at school as well as at home. That was my biggest challenge last year with research papers was that either students didn't want to work at home because then they couldn't work at school or vice versa.
The biggest obstacle that I see at our school is email blockage. Even though there are many free email providers that you can use, email is blocked at our school and students are not given a school email. So...I am not really sure how we can get around that road block? Any suggestions...
If we can somehow get the students to be able to create an email account if they do not already have one, I see myself using this very frequently.
Also, talk about going green, think of how much paper you would save!!!!
Oh another idea! Peer editing!!! That would be amazing :) Seniors creating surveys for their senior advocacy project!
I could go on about the possibilities forever.....

  1. I'm not sure I understand why email being blocked interferes with Google docs. Can you elaborate?

  2. For those students who do not already have an email account, I am unable to help them set one up because we are not given email access.

  3. Your post gave me another insight about Google Docs that I hadn't considered. I too have had students who declare that they will either work on a project on the school network or only on their computer at home. Some say they want to do it exclusively at home so their time at the computer is not limited as it is at school. I can understand this as some need more time to type and revise their work. Being able to access documents at both places should eliminate excuses for any student who has the internet at home. Thanks for the insight!

  4. Your post gave me some new insight into Google Docs. I too have students who declare that they don't want to work on their projects at both home and at school because they want it all in one location and some prefer home because their time is unlimited compared to the lab time they're given at school. Now those who have the internet will have no excuse for not working on their documents/presentations at both locations. Thanks for the insight!
